Live On Logan 2025: September 14th Recap
Pat Mallinger’s Quartet Playing the Music of Sonny Rollins

The final Live On Logan performance of 2025 featured saxophone wiz Pat Mallinger and his quartet play the music of Sonny Rollins at Logan Square’s Palmer Square Park.
Mallinger reminded the crowd at intermission that he was a “charter member” of Live On Logan, having played shows each year since the music series began on somebody’s lawn. He mentioned that he’d performed with a variety of groups, including the quartet that he brought with him today. And he repeatedly thanked Sergio Castro, who helped found the Live On Logan music series several years ago and still organizes it.
Sonny Rollins turned 95 last weekend. He’d be proud of the tribute Pat’s band put on, as well as the crowd size it drew. There’s something about free jazz music, world class musicians, and an afternoon in the park that really brings people together.
During the second half of the show, board members of the Park Advisory Council worked their way through the crowd, accepting donations for raffle tickets.
This week featured two prizes:
- A $175 gift certificate to Logan Square restaurant Andros Taverna.
- Two VIP tickets to next weekend’s Logan Square House Walk, which is focusing on historic homes in the Palmer Square area this year.
