Davis Trio plays their “garage jazz” for onlookers at Palmer Square Park

The penultimate Live On Logan performance of 2025 featured Chicago’s own J. Davis Trio, a group that’s been performing their own special brand of “garage jazz” around Chicagoland and beyond since 1999.

The trio takes the award for best dressed Live On Logan performers. Multiple musicians wore suit jackets and slacks while entertaining the crowd.

Sergio Castro, the founder and organizer of the Live On Logan jazz series at Logan Square’s Palmer Square Park, mentioned in his introduction that he’d first heard the group perform in a coffee shop in Wrigleyville and was “hooked” on their sound.

The band’s lead singer played the marimba, which is a neat pairing. It’s something different from the more common singer/guitarist, singer/bassist, singer/pianist combinations.

During the show, the Park Advisory Council’s very own Jeff, Christine, and Annie walked among the crowd, taking donations for a raffle. The prize? A $200 gift certificate to a local Logan Square business that also sponsors the Live On Logan series.

The J. Davis Trio occasionally invited guest singer Carla Prathers on-stage to sing a few numbers with them. She wowed the crowd with her rousing vocals!

While the J. Davis Trio played their unique “garage jazz” sound, delectable scents from the 2025 Taste of Serbia wafted under the park’s hybrid elms. The Old Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Church–a Palmer Square Park staple–hosts the annual event each September. It features Serbian food, drinks, music, dancing, and cultural activities.

The band played their take on A Tribe Called Quest’s 1990 hit “Can I Kick It?” while a black dachshund on a pink leash ran doughnuts around its seated owner, blazing a path in the grass as it ran 360s around her. It was almost enough to make me dizzy, and I wasn’t the one running!

Only one Live On Logan performance remains for 2025. Next Sunday, on September 14, Pat Mallinger will play the music of Sonny Rollins to conclude this year’s summer jazz series.

Written by Alex Garoffolo

The J.
